GUYMON — Stratford is one of the best 2A football programs in the State of Texas, and proved it Friday night, handing Class 5A Guymon a 56-10 loss in Guymon’s season-opener.
The Tiger offense showed bright spots, but Stratford’s in-your-face running game, mixed with key passes, was too much for Guymon’s new defensive scheme.

The Elks (2-0) took their first possession and drove 48 yards to paydirt, with Pedro Ortega doing the honors from three yards out for the score. The kick was wide right and Stratford led, 6-0.
But Guymon showed what its offense if capable of with a 76-yard scoring drive. The big play of the game for Guymon came after the Tigers had driven to the 48, but were backed up by a sack and a penalty to the 29. Jacob Santos ran a keeper for 14 yards to the 43.

Santos then tossed a short pass to Victor Legarda in the flats, and Legarda did the rest, avoiding several tackles and then turning on the jets for a 57-yard score. Javier Medina added the extra point and the Tigers led, 7-6.

That would be Guymon’s only lead of the night.
