GUYMON (March 4, 2016) – Not all residents know what to do when severe weather strikes. How would they respond should a rural fire or tornado head for their home? Is their home stocked with emergency supplies if the heat or electricity are shut off? What if their vehicle breaks down on a county road during severe weather? Each one of these scenarios has happened to residents in our area in the last few years.
An Emergency Preparedness Fair is planned for Tuesday, March 22, 2016, at the Texas County Activity Center hosted by Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City, in partnership with Texas County Emergency Management.
Beginning at 5:30 p.m., this free event will provide residents of Texas County with valuable information on how they can best prepare for the region’s severe weather and a free meal sponsored by Seaboard Foods.
The evening will include presentations by the National Weather Service, Guymon Fire Department, Central Oklahoma Humane Society, Oklahoma Emergency Management, and the Oklahoma Insurance Department.
Attendees will also hear stories from the 2012 Woodward, OK tornado which destroyed much of Mitchell Theatres. The theater is also sponsoring the event and will be giving away five $100 gift cards to Northridge Cinemas 8.
Additional sponsors who will be offering Family Emergency Kits valued at $30 as door prizes include the City of Guymon Emergency Management, Fire, and Police Departments, PTCI, TCEC, Apollo MedFlight and Hitch Enterprises.
The evening will conclude at 8 p.m. with a grand prize drawing for a $4,500 storm shelter installed by Vaughn Concrete Products Inc., and sponsored by Catholic Charities. The winner must be present to win.
For more information about the Emergency Preparedness Fair, visit or call 580-338-0911. The Texas County Activity Center is located at 5th and Sunset in Guymon.
