
The Oklahoma Association of Area Agencies on Aging (AAA) has teamed up with various sponsors throughout the state to host the 24th Annual Oklahoma State Senior Spelling Bee, May 15.
Several regional OEDA Area Agencies are preparing with preliminary spelling bee’s, by hosting area competitions with the winners moving onto the statewide competition.
“The purpose of the local and area spelling championships, through the Area Agencies on Aging is to challenge the intellect, promote opportunities for socialization and enhance the image of older adults,” OEDA AAA Information and Assistance Specialist, Kim Pierce reported, “There are 11 Area Agencies on Aging in the State of Oklahoma, so if they opt to hold their own area bees, then their inners can also compete at the state championship bee.”
The Northwest region AAA, which consists of Texas, Beaver, Cimarron, Dewey, Ellis, Harper, Woods and Woodward Counties will be holding an AAA Senior Spelling Bee in Beaver on April 13 from 1:30-3 p.m. in the OEDA conference room, located a 330 Douglas Ave.
To be eligible to participate in this regional event, entrants must be age 60 years or older, by May 15, 2012 and live in any of the previously listed counties.
“The first and second place winners at the OEDA AAA Spelling BEE will be able to attend the Oklahoma State Senior Spelling Bee at the Oklahoma State Conference on Aging in Norman, Okla. on May 15,” Pierce said. “The public is invited to attend an cheer on their hometown speller!”
The deadline for the regional event is April 9 and registering participants will receive a spelling word study guide. The event is free to the public and light refreshments will be served.
