FFA News: Timmons scholarship
Thursday, 22 May 2008
By Megan Barton
The Guymon FFA chapter has worked very close with Guymon native, Eloise Timmons. Ms. Timmons has been a sponsor for the Timmons scholarship which is awarded each year at the Guymon FFA banquet.  This is a $300 scholarship for 2 recipients that are enrolled in an agricultural science course and a member of the Guymon FFA chapter.   The selection of this scholarship is based upon the student’s skills and leadership experiences both inside and outside of the classroom and being in good standing with the Guymon FFA chapter. The scholarships are in honor of Homer and Annie Timmons. This year’s scholarship was awarded to Juan Cerda and Mallorie Moore.
Homer S. Timmons (1889-1957), came to Oklahoma territory in 1892, before statehood. Later he and his bride Annie (1913) lived in a half-drought southeast of Guymon near the Texas Stateline. They survived blizzards, the dust storms of the 30s, years with no crops, and grasshoppers, but lived a good life with close family ties, strong ethical values, close community involvement with many communities ( Vernon school district, Hitchland, Hardesty, Guymon, and later Goodwell), and active church participation. Three children blessed their union. Homer Timmons had an excellent reputation as a man of his word. The Timmons scholarship was established in 1981 in his honor.
Annie Timmons (1890-1992), was known as “Mother of the year” for the state of Oklahoma. She was the Pioneer Queen in 1983, where broke her hip two weeks before the Pioneer Days celebration but managed to ride in the parade in a wheelchair in the back of a pickup. She was active in the Methodist Church, Order of Eastern Star, W.C.T.U. The Timmons scholarship was established in 1993 in her honor. Thanks to their agricultural innovation and dedication to life long learning, their legacy will live on through their scholarship. Congratulations and good luck with your future endeavors Juan and Mallorie!

I have to say, I was so disappointed in the Pioneer Days parade this year. It just seemed to be one long commercial for businesses, hardly any floats that exhibited the theme, which was what? And any Tom, Dick,or Harry could drive his car in it. Where has the spirit of Pioneer Days gone? My dad was born north of Guymon in 1912, lived there his entire life, and died there in 1994. He was 81 years old. He was a true pioneer. He was a farmer who survived the dust bowl days. He saw so many things come to pass and he got to witness the evolution of all those wonderful things. He and so many like him are the kinds of people we need to honor with Pioneer Days. We should never forget our roots. People say that Guymon hasn't changed. Oh,yes it has!! No matter where I live, Guymon will always be home even though my parents have passed on. I am proud to say I am from Guymon. I enjoy coming home especially for Pioneer Days, but I hope next year it looks more like the Pioneer Days I grew up with. Pioneer Days is the one thing that shouldn't change and should always honor those who paved the way in the Panhandle.
