Wording regarding dress code issues in Guymon's elementary schools was among the items changed this week as the Guymon school district discussed changes to student handbooks. The handbooks were approved for the elementary schools, junior high and high school.
At issue in the elementary handbook was students no longer being allowed to dye hair a color other than a natural color. "There was an issue earlier this year at North Park where a non-natural color was added that was permanent. Changing it would damage the child's hair," Lori Aubrey told the school board this week. Aubrey is the principal of Carrier, Prairie, North Park and Salyer elementary schools. "That's why we would like to add (to the handbook wording) 'no permanent hair color.'" School board member Mitzi Dain wanted more specific wording to indicate that changes of an unnatural color would not be allowed. That way, kids who dye their hair from a natural color to another natural color would not be penalized. "Permanent or spray-on (would not be permitted) unless it is a natural hair color only," Aubrey said. "That way if some little Hannah Montana wannabe wants to highlight her hair blonde — that's a natural hair color — there really isn't any reason to say they can't." Dain agreed, "If someone wants to change their hair from brown to blonde, that's not disruptive to the school environment." The junior high added wording to clear up some dress code issues. Flip-flops will not be allowed, and shirts or shorts must be below mid-thigh. Also, no "Dickie" brand clothing will be permitted on campus. "Dickie is a brand notorious with gang activity," said junior high principal Jeff Funk. "One day this year, seven or eight students were prompted to wear Dickie by local gang members. That cost us about three hours of our instructional day." |
