Fireworks explode over Guymon as seen from Memorial Stadium on Friday night in this 8-second time exposure photo. The $5,000 fireworks display lasted about 10 minutes and was the only legal public display of fireworks in Texas County because of the burn ban. Guymon city and Texas County police responded to dozens of fireworks complaints as many in the city either didn't know about - or didn't care about - the fireworks ban and/or the burn ban. Those who were issued citations for violating the well-publicized ban on fireworks face a $500 fine in Guymon or a $1,000 fine if they were caught outside the city limits, and up to a year in the county jail for violating the rules.

City takes first step to pave south end roads

The first step in the capital improvement project has been set in motion after the city council approved a resolution authorizing an application for a $75,000 grant.
The application is for a grant from the Oklahoma Department of Commerce for the community development block grant program for a paving project in the southern portion of the Guymon city limits.
According to Ted Graham, interim city manager and human resource director, there is approximately one mile of paving that needs to be done on the south side of town. The streets included in the paving project are: South Lelia, South May, part of Ellison, SW Twelfth, SW Seventh, SW Quinn and Roosevelt.
In this area, so far the drainage is estimated at $881,000, including curb and gutters, says Graham.
"So we are trying to apply for this grant, see if it will work and this resolution will allow us to do so," Graham said.
For this year the city has missed the deadline to apply for a bigger grant, but next year in March they will be able to apply for a $400,000 grant.
In order to apply for this grant, Jada Dickerson, City of Guymon, has done a door to door survey to see what the average household income is for this area.
According to Dickerson, the grant is based on Hud guidelines which is 30 percent below the median income. For one person in a household you would have to make less than $23,000 in order to qualify.
