Embarking on a powerful, yet emotional journey is Emma Mackay of Forgan, Okla. and Libby Malkuch of Guymon as they take the steps in preparing for the Colorado (Rocky Mountains) Avon Walk in June.
For two days and 39 miles, they will take the opportunity to dramatically impact the lives of millions affected by breast cancer worldwide and help medically under-insured women and men receive the screening, support, treatment they require.
Everyone has a personal reason for taking part in the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer. It may be a sister, mother, best friend, or possibly even oneself.
Emma’s mother is a survivor of breast cancer.
"It is really something that I have wanted to do for a long time and it never seemed like the right time, but this is the year and I am excited about it,” Mackay said. “You don't realize until someone's had it and really get into and learn the statistics because I can't believe how many women actually suffer from the disease."
Malkuch feels that the disease is bigger than we are and has been led to help raise money for research.
"You don't know who all it affects until you actually look at the statistics. We have had so many people come up to us and tell us that their mother, sister or some family member had or is suffered from it. So this is a way that we can give back and help those who have suffered and lost," Mackay said.
"People have been really good and I feel that once you tell them what your doing it for they become interested in it."
Both Mackay and Malkuch have been training, building up to walking 26 miles in a day. They are so dedicated to the purpose that since they live so far from each other, twice a week they will meet in Baker, Okla. (half way) and walk together.
"We want to get a team together next year from Guymon and put together a proper fund raiser as soon as we finish this walk. And we really want to thank Sandy Mauldin, who participated in the walk last year, for all of her help." Malkuch said.
They must raise $1,800 in order to participate in the walk and they held a fundraiser last week raising $200 a piece. Between the both of them they are still needing to raise $1,300.
They would like to thank Wal-Mart and Homeland for donating cakes for the bake sale, Mitchell Theaters, Reids Furniture, Shiny Zebra for making cookies, Shear Perfection, Marilyn Arledge for the Mary Kay gift bags, Mark Wescoatt, Joe Cullop and all of those who generously donated to the cause.
For one weekend, they will unite with thousands all reaching for the same goal, finding a cure for breast cancer.
The walk will begin on Saturday, June 28 where they will start out walking 26.2 miles, rest for the night and then start again on Sunday finishing out the walk with 13.1 miles.
If you or someone you know would like to help send them to the Avon Walk for beast cancer please contact Mackay at (580) 528-1081 or Malkuch at (580) 338-7396.
