Brian Mitchell of Elkhart, Kan., was elected to the Kansas University Endowment Board of Trustees at their recent 116th annual meeting.
Mitchell is a third generation partner in his family business of farming real estate and investments. He graduated from KU in 1986 with a degree in accounting and business administration.
"I am very honored to become a part of the board and this is a lifetime appointment,  so they don't come available very often. And when an opening comes up you have to go for it," Mitchell said
He was recruited by the executive committee who had recommended Mitchell. He was also appointed to serve on the Property Management committee, chaired by Michael Michaelis, owner of Emprise Bank.
"My experience in the farming and real estate was an advantage for me. There is a lot of notable KU alumni and it is going to be an honor to be serving with them," Mitchell said. Adding with a giggle that this will give him a great excuse to get back up to Lawrence at least three or four times a year.
Board members' duties include setting policy on fundraising and assets management and serving on committees for KU Endowment programs and activities.
There are 30 members who serve on the committee and 7 members on the Property Management committee with Mitchell being one of the youngest serving on the board.

I have to say, I was so disappointed in the Pioneer Days parade this year. It just seemed to be one long commercial for businesses, hardly any floats that exhibited the theme, which was what? And any Tom, Dick,or Harry could drive his car in it. Where has the spirit of Pioneer Days gone? My dad was born north of Guymon in 1912, lived there his entire life, and died there in 1994. He was 81 years old. He was a true pioneer. He was a farmer who survived the dust bowl days. He saw so many things come to pass and he got to witness the evolution of all those wonderful things. He and so many like him are the kinds of people we need to honor with Pioneer Days. We should never forget our roots. People say that Guymon hasn't changed. Oh,yes it has!! No matter where I live, Guymon will always be home even though my parents have passed on. I am proud to say I am from Guymon. I enjoy coming home especially for Pioneer Days, but I hope next year it looks more like the Pioneer Days I grew up with. Pioneer Days is the one thing that shouldn't change and should always honor those who paved the way in the Panhandle.
