Fourty nine years of Wicker tradition comes to an end
Barber Jack Wicker of B&J Barber Shop is saying good bye to all of his customers of 49 years. On March 28, 1961, Jack came to Guymon from Amarillo to work with Cliff Beardmore at the Hotel Dale. In 1963, Jack purchased the Barber Shop and 1968, he moved to his present location of 116 E. Street. As of Monday, March 29, 2010, he will closing his shop. "In 1961, I made $1 a hair cut. I also traveled and did Hair Style shows. I have seen many changes in the hair cutting business since 1961." Jack has had working for him, Dean Moore, Leonard Martinez, and his brothers, Bill and Larry. As of the present time, Jack has three customers that have been coming to him for the past 49 years and is cutting fifth generations of families. "Four years ago I wrote and published a book called "45 Years Behind the Chair", telling many great stories that I have heard in the Barber Shop over those 45 years. They are all good, clean stories. I still have some books for sale and if you would like one, see me at the shop. They make great books for gifts." Jack and his wife, Jo, are moving to Enid and plan to do a lot of traveling and going to lots of grandkids school activities and do some fishing. "It is so hard to say good bye to such good friends and customers that I have so enjoyed getting to know over the past 49 years. We would like for you to come and see us in Enid." "Again, thank you to all my customers for your years of support."
