Agriculture business and production is an important part of life in the state of Oklahoma. With the high importance of agriculture in the state, leadership within the agriculture field becomes essential. The Oklahoma Agriculture Leadership Program (OALP) is a program designed to help develop future leaders in the field of agriculture in the state of Oklahoma. The objectives of the program are to help potential leaders in developing a deeper understanding of themselves and of people, to assist potential leaders in developing a better understanding of the various systems of economics and government and to help program participants further their existing knowledge to solve problems and explore opportunities for Oklahoma agriculture. The OALP consists of a series of seminars and study tours over a two-year period. During this two-year period, the OALP Class 14 traveled to Guymon for the regional seminar. While in the Guymon area, the class members toured Seaboard Foods of Guymon, National Beef in Liberal, Kansas and No Man's Land Beef Jerky in Boise City. According to Ron Hays of the Oklahoma Farm Report, this was the first trip OALP Class 14 has taken to Texas and Cimarron Counties and the level of agriculture production and business blows them away. The OALP manual states there are three areas in which new leadership can be developed and are 1) more people in agriculture production and business can be induced to assume leadership responsibility, 2) businesses allied with agriculture should provide leadership, 3) agriculture educators who serve the agricultural communities can increase their leadership roles. The current OALP class consists of 27 members and is directed by Joseph Williams.
