Having a roof over our heads and a hot meal on the table is a luxury that some locals simply do not have.
Founded in 1995, the Oaks of Mamre is a shelter for those needing temporary housing and it relies on donations and support from the Guymon community to keep its mission going.
The facility located on the corner of Fourth Street and Ellison has the capacity to house 34 people. Oaks of Mamre staff explain that with the economy in a struggling state, it remains full most of the time.
Relying solely on donations from the public and various civic organizations, the Oaks of Mame is a non-profit organization.
One of the largest supporters of the shelter is Guymon's Ministerial Alliance.
Residents typically stay for two to three weeks and are not allowed to stay more than 90 days. They must each acquire a job in the first two weeks and begin paying a small rental fee. Chores and housekeeping duties are also done by  the residents.
Together, volunteers and staff work to ensure that each resident has warm food, a safe place to sleep and the opportunity to get their lives moving forward.
"Volunteers are always needed," said Bob Post, Oaks of Mamre Manager. "We have a lot of odd jobs that need to be done such as doors fixed, painting. We also need things like furniture, bedding and beds."
With the Meal a Month Program, locals are able to provide a warm meal for the residents. Businesses such as Mazzio's Pizza already provide meals for them. There are several open dates for the remainder of the year-- August 31, September 29 and 30, October 23 and 29, November 30, December 29, 30 and 31 and every third Friday of the month. Businesses or individuals willing to help out and provide a warm meal are asked to email Kristin Frisby, This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it
For all other donations, monetary or items, go by the Oaks of Mamre at 409 N. Ellison or call Bob Post at 461-1702.
