Making quilts is an intensely tedious task, but some local residents are now award-winning quilt makers. Panhandle Piecers, a local quilting organization recently participated in the Needles and Friends Quilt Guild contest in Liberal, Kan, Nearly 400 quilts and quilted items were on display at the Seward Co. Activity Center. Local winners include-- First place in machine applique, Nancy Davis; Second place in group quilt, Carolee Campbell; First place in hand quilting, Faye Costner; First place in home decor, Phyllis Stephens; First place in miniatures, Faye Costner; First place in other small, Carolee Campbell and First place in Teacher's Choice by Lynda Smith, Ellen Grice. "I was really surprised," said Davis. "So many of us from Guymon placed and it was great." Davis has been quilting for nearly 30 years. She spent over two months and approximately 80 hours on her award-winning quilt. The quilt is being donated to the No Man's Land Historical Museum in Goodwell as part of the Pioneer Gala Fundraiser. The fundraiser will take placed on October 24 at the Pickle Creek event center. Panhandle Piecers meets on a monthly basis. At the meetings they discuss and share different techniques along with working on group quilts. The group consists of nearly 30 members who are dedicated to the hobby of quilt-making. Panhandle Piecers is open to anyone with an interest in quilts. The group meets the last Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church located at 1212 N. Crumley St.
