A convicted sex offender was arrested after failing to report he was living with a child and loitering on school grounds. According to the probable cause affidavit filed at the Texas County Court Clerk's Office, John Hoffman, 26, was living in Tyrone, Okla. with a family that was first unaware of his previous criminal history. The family baby-sat children and also had two children.
Hoffman is required to list everyone living at the home he resides and he failed to do so.
Once informed that Hoffman was a registered sex offender, the family asked him to leave their home on or about April 10, 2009. The family also reported him to the Sheriff's office. The family reported that they had taken Hoffman to Amarillo, Texas, where he flew to Florida for a few weeks to look for a job in the forestry service. This was not the first time the Sheriff's Department had been notified of Hoffman leaving for Florida.
Hoffman stayed in Florida until his sex offender address verification came in the mail, where the family notified him that it had came for him.
Two days before the family asked Hoffman to leave their home, the principal of Tyrone's school system called to report Hoffman had been hanging out on school grounds for a few weeks. The Principal called after a concerned parent brought Hoffman to his attention, the principal also stated he had seen Hoffman around for a few weeks. Due to the terms of Hoffman's probation, he is not to be within 300 feet of a school, daycare or park.
Hoffman was sent a letter per the request of Assistant District Attorney Buddy Leach asking him to please come to the Sheriff's Office so they could obtain his current information and review his requirements on his duties to register as a sexual offender, the letter was sent April 16, 2009.
Next, Jalonda Layton, the Texas County Sex Offender Registration Clerk, requested a letter be sent to Hoffman from the sex and violent offender registration unit out of Oklahoma City to mail Hoffman an address letter, which was mailed May 12, 2009. Hoffman had 10 days to comply with the letter. He never responded. The office then contacted Hoffman's probation officer and they had an old address.
On June 2, 2009, a Guymon resident who was aware of Hoffman's criminal history observed him carrying a gas can and walking to a home behind the Academy Alternative School, they then contacted the Sheriff's office.
Hoffman was released on a bond of $20,000 and awaits trial for the following counts: Count I, failure to notify address change as a sex offender, a felony. Count II, failure to notify all occupants in the home, a felony. Count III, a sex offender living within 2000 feet of a school. Count IV, failure to register as a sex offender, a felony. Count V, safety zones around elementary and junior high schools, child care facilities and playgrounds, a misdemeanor.
