Summertime. We usually think of the sun, vacations, water and of course, flowers. The "Saturday in the Gardens" garden tour, presented by the Delphinium Garden Club and Paul's Scarlet Garden Club, had local residents driving cross-town Saturday to admire some of the area's most ravishing gardens. Beginning in 2000, this garden tour has become a local favorite for all ages. It is a come-and-go event where attendees travel to each of the houses to view their gardens. They are also able to speak with each other homeowners to find out the specifics of their gardens. The cost to attend the tour was $5 and all proceeds went toward the beautification of Guymon. The homes of four local families played host to this year's tour-- David and Jennie Watkins, Nick and Brenda Neville, James and Roz Keimig and Marsha Strong and Ramey Cozart. Each home boasted a different type of garden, from wild and vibrant to urban and shady. The homes were selected a couple of months ago based on their beauty and character. "We were more than happy to be a garden in this year's garden tour," said Brenda Neville, a hosting yard owner. The Delphinium Garden Club traces its routes back to 1934. It remains a local stronghold as it maintains approximately 20 members. Each year, the "Saturday in the Gardens" garden tour helps raise money for their annual project. One the clubs project to be started in the fall is known as the "Golden Ears" project. It is in conjunction with a daffodil company. Daffodils will be provided for club members to plant and then deliver to the elderly at home and in nursing homes. "We just hope that it sheds a little light on to their day," said Delphinium Garden Club co-president Mabel Martinez. "We hope to get it started soon." The Delphinium Garden Club is also in charge of the scenery at North Park and the barrels of flowers at Northridge Christian School. Co-Presidents of the club are Mabel Martinez and Naomi Mayer. Former president, Elizabeth Lewis is now the state president of the garden club. "We would like to thank each and everyone who participated in our garden tour this year," said Martinez. The Delphinium Garden Club is already looking for new homes to feature in next year's tour. If interested, call co-President Mabel Martinez at 338-2296.
