"Making the world a better place" is the Girl Scout motto and it can be a tall order, but with 3.6 million Girl Scouts dedicated to helping others worldwide, local organization and activism can go a long way to achieving just that. This week marks the 97th Anniversary of the founding of the organization on March 12, 1912, and to commemorate this day, Girl Scouts from all over will be out doing public service all week long encouraging others to follow their example and work towards making this world a little brighter. Though the actual anniversary is March 12, the Girl Scouts celebrated their birthday on Sunday, March 8. Monday had scouts decorating posters for Community Poster Day. Tuesday, March 10, was Friendship Day. March 11, is Go Green Day and has the girls focusing on environmental issues and community service. The March 12, Anniversary is Girl Scout Alumni Day and they will be celebrating their past, present and future with an open house from 2-6 p.m. at the Girl Scout Guymon Service Center next to the police station on Fifth Street. The girls will be working on their living scrapbook and telling stories of their experiences with scouts. March 13, is Say Thank You Day reminding everyone to be thankful for the many blessings of life and last but not least, the final day of the commemorative week, March 14, will be Make A Difference Day, encouraging Girl Scouts everywhere to go out and do something special for others that influences them or the world in a positive way. The Girl Scouts of Texas Oklahoma Plains Council has over 81 counties in its region, reaching out to communities large or small, rich or poor, to girls of any age or background, with the mission of, "building girls of courage, confidence and character who make the world a better place."
