A Closer Look at Turpin’s Board of Education Candidates for 2009 |

The two candidates running for the Turpin Public Schools Board of Education in the Feb. 10, 2009 election are Tara E. Kirkhart and Laura J. Lawder Estes. Tara E. Kirkhart is the 45 year old Republican from Turpin who says her platform is, "Focusing on providing the best educational opportunities for the educational growth of students in Turpin Schools through accountability and dedications of the members of the board of education, administration, faculty and students." Kirkhart and her husband Roger have three children ages eleven, seventeen and nineteen. She is the co-owner of Panhandle Pizza and a retired educator. She has taught in Minneola, Kan., Liberal, Kan. and Turpin. She has attended the Vocational Family and Consumer Science program in the Secondary Level from Southwestern College in Winfield, Kan. Kirkhart was selected as the Middle School Teacher of the Year in Liberal, Kan. and has been the Guest Educational Presenter at the Kansas Reading Conference and the Southwest Kansas Math Conference. She is an active member of the Turpin United Methodist Church serving on two committees, the Children Ministry Committee and the Family Ministry Committee. She is the community Easter Egg Hunt Chairman, the co-chairman of the Turpin Food Pantry and has volunteered for numerous community events as well as tutoring students after school. Laura J. Lawder Estes is the 34 year old Republican from Turpin. She and husband Bryan Estes have two children ages three and five. Estes has been working as a Pharmacist at Wal-Mart since 1998 and was previously employed with Hinds Family Pharmacy in Cordell, Okla. She is a 1993 Turpin Public Schools graduate and received her B.S. in Pharmacy from Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford, Okla.
