Guymon teachers attend training workshop for a new energy education curriculum purposed by the Oklahoma Energy Resources Board (OERB). The OERB was created in 1993 by the Okla. Legislature to do environmental restorations on abandoned wells and to educate the public about the petroleum industry. OERB has provided a full curriculum for elementary, middle and high school student through a Fossils to Fuel program, Petro Active program, and CORE Energy program, as well as experiments, teacher's guides, classroom materials and field trips to museums with energy exhibits. The entire package is provided at no cost and teachers receive a substitute reimbursement. OERB receives funding through a voluntary one tenth of 1 percent assessment on oil and natural gas producers and royalty owners. OERB Education Director Landi Thompson said in a press release, "our research proved textbooks alone don't provide Oklahoma students with enough in-debth information about this industry, so we created a curriculum to fill that gap." Guymon High School teacher Zach McIntyre received training for the Core Energy Social Studies curriculum. Guymon Junior High teacher Carol Cornelius and Guymon Central Junior High teacher Justin Gift received training for the Petro Active program and Guymon High School teachers Lexy Gift and Jacqueline Newman received training for the CORE Energy Language Arts and Energy Science curriculum programs. OERB in partnership with museums statewide and the Petro Pros in-class presentation program also provide scholarships for college students and safety information and videos for the public.
