The Guymon Daily Herald is reaching out to help put newspapers into the hands of students with the Newspapers in Education (NIE) program, specifically Guymon, Goodwell and Texahoma.
The daily newspaper is a dynamic textbook that chronicles our times while stimulating young minds.
The newspaper keeps individuals informed about world events, the economy,  local news, but that's not all. What people may not realize is that a newspaper also gives you a daily lesson in geography, economics, math, technology, science and social studies. Making it the most up-to-date textbook available to the students.
Students from kindergarten to grade 12 can discover exciting information about current events, science, and social issues that affect their lives. Using newspapers as teaching elements can help teachers develop competent students in basic skills like reading and math.
The newspaper is an ideal classroom tool because:
• Newspapers are timely and relevant. Current affairs come alive, while ads deal with real products, prices and events.
• Newspapers motivate. There is something in every newspaper to interest every student: comics, sports, ads, photographs and local features.
• Newspapers are adaptable. Students can read, cut, paste, fold, spindle, tear, color and write on a newspaper … and then recycle it.
Since the Guymon Daily Herald firmly stands behind education and the literacy in our community, they are committed to underwrite 75 percent of the cost for providing newspapers to the classroom. However, to keep this going for the students free of charge, help is needed to cover the other 25 percent.
As a sponsor you can help provide newspapers for the students in the classrooms each week. Taking part in the spread of literacy is important and others in the community will know as well by NIE ads that will run in the newspaper showing everyone the generosity and commitment of those who have chosen to sponsor the program.
The Guymon Daily Herald will also post an acknowledgment of thanks on their website, www.guymondailyherald.com.
There are four donation levels; bronze ($25- $99), silver ($100- $249), gold ($250- $499) and platinum ($500 and above).
For more information or if you would like to be a sponsor please contact Circulation Manager, Peggy Martinez at (580) 338-3355.
Together we can help spread literacy in our community....and beyond.
