Hard hits and metal crunching pleased the crowd of demolition derby fans Saturday night.
One spectator reported some the hardest hits in a long while.
Guymon's own Darrell Eggers, who comes from a family of great derby enthusiasts and champions, won the grand prize $1000 check. Although it wasn't his first win, it was Eggers first win after a break from derbies, and his family and friends surrounded him overjoyed.
The derby was a success according to the event coordinators as well.
"We had 13 cars total," Matt Littlejohn said, who runs the derby company Mangled Motorsports with his wife Renee.
Matt added that the number of entrants was up from the last derby in June, where 10 showed up to enter, but only eight derby cars ran. But that's just one of those expected kinks in the world of demolition derbies.
"This derby, we ran three heats, the consolation and the finals," Matt said. "The weather turned out great. There was lots of hard hitting action, and I hope the crowd enjoyed it and continue to come back."
"We had approximately 800 in the stands. It was a good crowd."
The Littlejohns were also pleased with the truckload of canned goods they collected as an entry fee for children. "They will be delivered to Loaves and Fishes and Domestic Crisis Center today," Matt said.
Money was awarded up to sixth place again this year.
Other winners were as follows: Scott Addison of Cimarron, Kan., took second for $500; Robert Amerin of Plains, Kan., took third for $250; Brandon Harper of Perryton, Texas took fourth for $125; Jeremy Rowlan of Perryton, Texas, took fifth for $75; and Joe Ledbetter of Guymon took sixth for $30.
The next Mangled Motorsports derby will be in June 2009.
