Main Street Party and Car Show Saturday
Thursday, 04 September 2008
John Cougar Mellencamp says it all too perfect in the lyrics of his “Small Town” track that comes from the 1985 Scarecrow album.
The private citizens of small town Hooker, Okla. have been kicking up excitement through organizing and executing an annual growing and exciting event started by Linda and Kent Martin five years ago and has recently been supported a great deal by Tim Hedrick and Joe Hedrick and their families and the Flatlanders Car Club. The Martin and Hedrick families have embraced the importance of providing outlets for the survival of their small town.
“Restoration programs are powered by the private citizens of Hooker, and those citizens believe that restoration programs are the key to bringing honor to small town citizens, providing opportunities for new growth and better futures, preserving the opinions about the spirit of the community, bringing the community closer together and revitalizing old ways and new ideas to create a solid foundation and good hometown jobs for our future youth”  Tim Hedrick said.
Local citizens, Tim Hedrick and his brother Joe reminisce with other Hooker residents about the old Grey’s Drugstore where fountain sodas and candy were served to the school kids on their lunch break. “We are bringing it back to the kids of today so they can experience a fun soda shop and have somewhere fun to hangout. We will serve burgers, soda pops and ice cream, it’s going to be fun!”  Hedrick said.
Hooker, Okla. is celebrating their small town with a festival, a city-wide garage sale, merchant sidewalk sales and a car show on Saturday, September 6 from 9 am throughout the evening. The citizens of Hooker would like to invite everyone in the regional area to participate in the car show or just bring their families and friends to check out the classic cars and spectacular merchant deals and help to celebrate their small town.
Participants in the car show will have the chance to win $3,500 in cash and prizes. Some of the awards given will be $75 for the top 15, people’s choice award, the most miles traveled award, award for the car club with the most entries and dealer picks. Registration for the car show begins at 7:30 am on Saturday, September 6 with a car entry fee of $10. The show starts at 9 am and will run until 2:30 pm with the awards program beginning at 2:30 pm.
Other than food vendors offering food along the streets throughout the day, a BBQ ribs and hamburgers cookout will occur at 4:30 pm and is free for car show participants. The cookout will be available to the general public for a $5. All car show participants are encouraged to bring a covered dish if distance permits that can be kept in the coolers at Linda’s Flower Shop until ready to serve. People wishing to participate in the car show can download a registration form at www.HookerCarShow.com.
