Tigers off to rough start in Kingfisher

Staff report

KINGFISHER — To say Guymon High School’s season football opener was rough would be an understatement. The Tigers didn’t get their initial first down of the game until there were 2 seconds left in the first half, while Kingfisher led 14-0 before it had even run an offensive play.
The host Yellowjackets jumped to a 58-0 halftime lead and coasted to a 70-0 victory over the Tigers.
Kingfisher ran Guymon’s first two punts back for touchdowns of 59 and 65 yards. After Guymon’s third punt, the Yellowjackets took over at their own 49. Three plays later, they were in the end zone again for a 21-0 lead.
On Guymon’s ensuing possession, a bad punt snap forced Jacob Test to kneel with the ball in the end zone for a safety and a 23-0 Kingfisher advantage.
Guymon was forced to kick off from its own 20 after the safety, and the Yellowjackets returned it 55 yards for a score. However, a block in the back called it back and gave Kingfisher the ball at its own 44.
But that was only a slight delay as on the next play, Kingfisher ran the ball 56 yards for a touchdown and a 30-0 lead.
After Guymon’s fifth consecutive punt, Kingfisher took over at the Guymon 41. But the Tigers defense began to show some improvement, forcing the Jackets into an 8-play drive that culminated with a 10-yard touchdown pass and a 37-0 Kingfisher lead early in the second quarter.. The drive featured two Guymon penalties that gave the Jackets first downs.
The first play of Guymon’s next possession resulted in an interception, and Kingfisher took over at the Tiger 40. Four plays later, the Jackets were in the end zone and led 44-0 with 9:33 to play in the second quarter.
After Guymon’s sixth straight punt, it didn’t take long for the Jackets to score — one play — a 39 yard touchdown run, and the score was 51-0.
The Tigers decided to go for it on fourth down on their ensuing possession, but an incomplete pass by Test on 4th and 6 gave Kingfisher the ball at the Tiger 25. Two plays later, the Jackets were in the end zone off a 4-yard quarterback keeper to make the score 58-0.
The Tigers again went for it on 4th down on their next drive, and this time it worked as Test took a quarterback keeper and raced 19 yards for Guymon’s first 1st down of the game, coming with 2 seconds left in the half.
The Tigers showed some improvement in the second half as the Jackets called off the dogs — but not after Kingfisher took the opening kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown and a 64-0 lead.
Bright spots for Guymon in the second half were some great catch and run plays from Test to Austin Stonecipher, an interception by Stonecipher and a great catch by Colby Martin in the third quarter.
The Tigers ended the third and began the fourth quarter with a drive from its own 13 to the Kingfisher 20 on a couple of great catches by Alex Zakrezewicz. But a penalty and a big sack of Test ended the drive.
The Yellowjackets put together it’s final scoring drive with an 11-play, 65-yard drive, with 4th-string quarterback Tucker Harrington taking a keeper around the left side for the touchdown.
Guymon got a couple of good plays in the final minute from Stonecipher and Clay Brooks.
The Tigers will play their first home contest of 2012 next Friday night when the Liberal Redskins come to town.
