TEXHOMA—Good pitching by Bailey Talbert and strong defense helped the Lady Devils beat Goodwell 13-1 Tuesday.
The second half of the doubleheader was counted as a junior varsity contest for Texhoma and a varsity game for Goodwell. Goodwell won that game 15-6.
“Today’s varsity game — Bailey (Talbert) came out and pitched a good game and our defense backed her up,” said Texhoma head coach Greg Higgins.
“We played a pretty good game with pitching and fielding,” he said.
There were six hits for Texhoma. Goodwell had two hits. Texhoma had one error and Goodwell had six.
There were six Texhoma hits in the varsity game including a three-run home run by Reagan Higgins.
Tabra Elliott had three RBIs, Tristen Green had two, and Tayci Peterson, Riley Higgins and Randi Yates each had one RBI.
Texhoma pitcher Bailey Talbert had six strikouts.
Shaylee Kelso four for Goodwell.
The JV game amounted to experience for Texhoma’s younger players. A few of the experienced varsity players played in that game.
“We were trying to get our young players some game time. There were a lot of runs on walks,” Higgins said.
The Lady Eagle’s Veronica Butter doubled and singled.
The Lady Devil’s Randi Yates hit a double. Kirsten Campbell and Sidney yates each singled for the Lady Devils.
“The focus level with any team is we can’t make an error and then walk the next girl and we seem to do that,” said Goodwell head coach Gary Page. “It’s just a focus issue. You’ve got to stay locked in.”
Texhoma will host the Guymon Lady Tigers Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
Both teams will participate in the Guymon Tournament Friday and Saturday.
Junior high
The Lady Eagles and Lady Devils scrimmaged with their junior high teams between the two high school games. Every girl batted in each of three innings. Every pitcher pitched.
The unofficial score was Goodwell 14, Texhoma 5.
“Junior high (organized softball) is a work in progress. It will get better with time,” Higgins said.
Texhoma has had very little junior high practice so far this season. Several area schools including Goodwell, Hooker and Guymon have started junior high softball programs for the first time this year.
