Sledge steps up for Clayton match

August 25, 2012

Ashton Sledge

Ashton Sledge stepped up and took Kate Strickland’s place when Strickland was unable to play at Clayton, N.M., Thursday night.
Sledge took Strickland’s spot at the match when Strickland became ill in Clayton. Sledge, who usually plays the defensive libero position, recorded 10 kills as an offensive player filling in for Strickland.
The Lady Tigers lost the match 27-25, 15-25, 12-25 and 20-25.
“We had to shuffle some people around. It was a little bit tough last night,” Guymon head coach Ty Ware said Friday morning.
He speculated that the outcome of the match could have been different if Strickland had played.
“I thought it would have helped quite a bit,” Ware said of the scenario of Strickland playing.
“Ashton Sledge played awesome,” he said.
Nehyma Martinez and Anna Blood moved from the junior varsity to the varsity, at least for the Clayton match. Martinez moved into the libero spot that Sledge usually plays at.
“She did a good job,” Ware said.
He said he didn’t know Friday morning if Blood or Martinez would remain on the varsity at this time.
In addition to Sledge’s 10 kills, Blood had six and Erin Bledsoe had four. Jessie Groves had four blocks and Bledsoe had three. Megan Rogers had 22 assists.
Guymon next plays Tuesday at Rolla, Kan.
