The Lady Tigers showed up at their field ready to play Tuesday afternoon and the Lady Devils apparently didn’t.
Guymon extended a winning streak to six games with 9-2 and 13-2 wins over Texhoma, a team that beat them on both ends of a doubleheader on Aug. 23.
Guymon pitcher Macy Pritchard striking out 12 batters in the eight innings she pitched helped. So did solid hitting and defense. Pritchard recorded nine strikeouts in the five-inning first game and three in the three-inning Game 2.
“They hit the ball and we didn’t,” said Texhoma head coach Greg Higgins.
“You play a five inning game and you leave eight runners on base you aren’t going to win,” he said.
“We didn’t play like we are capable of playing,” Higgins said.
Guymon head coach Wesley Bryson credited the Lady Tigers with hitting the ball better than they had been earlier in the season when the team was struggling. He also praised Pritchard’s pitching, which has improved since earlier in the season.
“They’re hitting the ball real good. They’re physically capable of winning every game. Now they are there mentally,” he said.
Bryson credited the team with backing up Pritchard’s pitching with good defensive play.
“My infield and my outfield helps me and I have a good catcher,” Pritchard said of the solid defensive effort and catcher Courtney Padilla.
The Lady Devils took a 1-0 first-inning lead in Game 1 when Tristen Green beat out an infield ground ball and Makayla Rodriguez scored. She had singled and stolen second and third bases.
Guymon scored first in the bottom of the first inning on a single by Shay Henry that drove in Kennedy Melton who had gotten on base by beating out a bunt. Then Lakin Winters doubled to deep left field for two RBIs. Henry and Jahaira Marquez scored making the tally 3-1.
Pritchard led off in the third inning with a double. Anahiz Alverez singled sending Pritchard to third base. She scored on a single by Melton.
Texhoma scored a second run in the fourth inning on a single by Randi Yates that drove in Braelyn Beattie who had singled.
Melton, Monica Padilla and Marquez hit back-to-back doubles in the bottom of the fourth inning leading to four more Guymon runs.
Texhoma went quietly in the fifth inning with two of the three outs coming on Pritchard’s eighth and ninth strikeouts.
The Lady Tigers kept their momentum going with a 10-run first inning. Melton and Padilla singled and Marquez then hit a single driving in both Melton and Padilla. Graciela Gutierrez then singled and Henry hit a line drive to the fence driving in Marquez. Winters then singled scoring Gutierrez. Pritchard also singled, driving in Henry and Winters scored on a wild pitch. Alverez then drove in Pritchard. Melton doubled, Padilla singled and then Guiterrez drove in two runs. A base hit by Henry scored Padilla.
The Lady Devils answered Guymon’s 10-run assault with just one second-inning run when Reagan Higgins doubled driving in Jordan Whitfield who was a courtesy runner for Bailey Talbert.
Guymon scored three more runs in the bottom of the second inning when Carli Purdy scored on a wild pitch and Marquez doubled scoring Melton and Padilla.
Texhoma’s Randi Yates singled in the third inning and scored on a sacrifice by Rodriguez.
