HOOKER—The Tornadoes didn’t quite blow through Hooker Tuesday night, with a Bulldog varsity 20-2 win over Goodwell-Yarbrough.
That big win in the softball opener might have jump started Hooker’s season.
Another high school game was counted as junior variety. Goodwell-Yarbrough head coach Gary Page said the JV game ended with a 10-10 tie. According to Hooker’s stat book, which is the book of record, the final score was 10-9 in Hooker’s favor.
However, Hooker head coach Terry Meade said, “I agreed to call it a JV game and call it 10-10.”
“The first game, there was no doubt about it, it was 20-2,” Meade said.
Hooker pitcher Kyra Cathcart struck out three batters in that game.
“She doesn’t throw very hard, but she’s got pretty good control,” Meade said.
Jade Cathcart drove in four runs with a two-RBI double and a two-RBI single.
Kyra Cathcart singled driving in two runs.
Dallas Caulwell singled with one RBI.
Dana Jimenez singled for two RBIs.
In the JV game, the Tornadoes led 3-0 after the first inning. Goodwell-Yarbrough scored three runs in each of the three innings played, according to Hooker’s book. The Lady Bulldogs scored five runs in the second inning and five more in the third.
Dana Jimenez tripled and singled with two RBIs.
Jade Cathcart scored two runs, singled twice and batted in one run.
Starting pitcher Shania Miller struck out four.
Kyra Cathcart came in as a relief pitcher in the third inning and retired the side. She also doubled in the bottom of the third inning driving in two runs.
“We just had trouble with our pitching and fielding both,” Page said.
There were no big hits for the Tornadoes.
Page said the loss of last year’s starting pitcher and shortstop to graduation has left the team with a void.
“We just didn’t pitch well and we lost our starting pitcher and starting shortstop, so those are always big holes to fill,” he said.
Goodwell-Yarbrough pitcher Shaylee Kelso pitched the entirety of both games and took both losses. She struck out two in the first game and three in the second.
Hooker next plays at the Beaver-Forgan Tournament Friday and Saturday.
Goodwell-Yarbrough plays at Tyrone today, at 4:30 p.m.
Junior High
Hooker Junior High beat Goodwell-Yarbrough 10-3. The winning pitcher was Sarah Kraft with six strikeouts. Naomi Rodriguez hit an inside the park grand slam home run giving her a game-high four runs batted in. Kraft doubled and singled and drove in one run. Savanna Clifford had one RBI. Gissel Ugarte singled driving in two runs.
