TYRONE -- After the Lady Tigers junior varsity and Tyrone’s varsity split a doubleheader Tuesday night, both coaches said their teams had improved.
Tyrone won the first game 15-3 and the Guymon junior varsity won the second game 13-8.
“We definitely played better today than we did in the tournament,” said Guymon coach Ty Palmer.
He was referring to the Guymon JV losing to Tyrone in the Tyrone Tournament last Friday.
“Everybody was good today,” Palmer said of the improved performance of the players.
Brittany Beldon was the winning pitcher of Game 2. Miranda Sandoval was the pitcher of record in the first game.
Guymon JV won Game 2 13-8 with five-run innings for the first and second innings. The Lady Tigers added three more runs in the third inning.
Paige Holmes and Leslie Salcedo both scored three runs each and Belden scored two runs.
“It was our best game yet. We did a lot of good things, hitting especially.  Still have to work a few kinks out on defense, but it was a good day for us,” Palmer said.
Game 1 was a different story.
“The game was won by Tyrone 15-3. It was called after four innings. The Guymon JV scored three runs in the second inning and Tyrone scored in all four innings,” Palmer said.
“Even though the score looks bad, we actually played better then the score showed.
“Everybody played pretty well,” said Tyrone head coach Hope Cox.
“We started our freshman pitcher, Ashley Rearden. She did really well. She had three strike outs, two looking. She got us into positions where we got out of the inning,” she said.
“The girls came out ready to play, which is always good. We were aggressive on the bases so passed balls or walks got us in,” Cox said.
Tyrone’s shortstop, Alondra Avilez, was injured and Cox said it was unknown last night how long the junior might be unable to play.
“I had quite a few girls that stepped up for me,” Cox said.
She credited catcher Amanda Winter for hitting the ball well, her pinch runner, Shelby Davis, for aggressive base running, Jordan Koehn for hitting the ball well and driving in two runs, and Avilez for good hitting before she was injured.
“We’re taking it a game at a time waiting for the next one,” Cox said.
Goodwell will play at Tyrone Thursday.
