Guymon Cross Country meets in Hugoton, Edmond

On Friday the Tiger varsity teams competed in the Edmond Dog Pack Run at Edmond Santa Fe High School, the site of the 5-A state meet on Oct. 27th. The varsity team competed in the 5A-4A-3A-2A races. The boy’s team was led by Sophomore Derek Portillo placing 11th (17:41). He was followed closely by Cory Nunez(JR) in 17th (18:06), and Angel Vega(SO) placed 21st (18:16). Baily Homan(FR), (18:41), and Kassius Urquiza(SO) (18:42), and Brandon Alvarez(SO) (19:34), rounded out the top five runners for the boys. As a team they placed 4th out of 9 teams, second out of the four 5-A teams competing, while running their fastest team average of the year at an 18:17. There were 69 runners in the race. 5-A #1 Deer Creek won the meet with 30 points, 4-A #1 Anadarko placed second with 77, 3-A #1 Plainview was 3rd with 85 points, and we scored 99, and 5-A Shawnee was a distant 5th with 113 points.
The girls were led by Alejandra Alvidrez(SR) (14:03) placing 32nd , and Kasey Garcia(SR) (14:22) placing 40th. Annie Pierce(FR) and Paige Nelson(FR) were close behind and both ran 14:28, placing inside the top 50. There were 73 runners in the race and the Lady Tigers placed 7th out of 9 teams, and 4th out of 5 of the 5-A teams competing. Their team average for the 3200m course was a 14:28, a minute faster than this time last year.
On Saturday the Tiger cross country team traveled to Hugoton, KS. There were five races and we brought home five medals and a second (8th boys) and third place (7th Girls) team finish.
The 7th grade girls started off the morning with a one mile run. Gabby Ramos led the pack for the lady tigers as she placed 5th out of 84 runners. She was followed by Rosy Morales(24), Juanita Mendoza(36), and Adriana Romero(38). The girls placed 3rd out of six teams with 72 points as Liberal West won the team division with 32 points.
The 7th grade boys placed 8th out of 9 teams with 194 points. Gabriel Meza led the way for the team and placed 44th. He was followed by; Jason Welch(48), Gabriel Galvan(56), and Noel Nunez(60). There were 103 runners in the race.
In the 8th grade girl’s race, Saile Molina led the team placing 33rd and was followed by Rayhana Nunley(43), Alicia Gonzalez(56), Wendy Salinas(59), and Kirsten McDowell (62). The girls placed 8th in the team standings, there were 71 runners in the race.
The 8th grade boys were edged out in a close team battle with Kenneth Henderson scoring 72, as we were ten points back with 82. Ivan Erives leading the team with a 14th place finish. Frank Moreno(20), Edgar Palma(31), Manase Matengenzara (32) , and Chandler Evans(42) rounded out the top five runners for the boys.
The JV boys and girls race was up next and we had several runners competing in that race. On the girls side we had a full team of high school runners in this division and it was Rebecca Lozano(JR) leading the way with a 16th place finish. Janett Amador(FR) and Ami Torres(JR) ran well and placed inside the top twenty. The boys were paced by Kristian Hinojos as he placed 10th, Christian Reyes(FR) and Alex Cortez(FR) were close behind in 11th and 13th place. All three boys earned a medal in the race. There were 72 runners in the girl’s race and 67 in the boys.
The next race for the Tigers is the Beaver meet on Saturday Sept. 22. The races will begin at 9:00a.m. by the Beaver football field with the JH Girls 1.5 mile run, followed with the JH boys 2 mile, HS girls 2 mile, and then HS boys 5K.
