Does Guymon finally have a Tiger in the tank?
The analogy from the Enco and Esso (now Exxon) television advertising slogan that was popular during the 1960s illustrates that the Guymon Tigers now seem to be an improved team — hence powered by a tiger.
The 0-5 Tigers are still looking for their first win but they seemed to have their offense and defense in a heightened mode when they played Northwest Classen last Friday. Guymon’s Homecoming game ended in a 28-7 loss, but the loss was only by three scores, a closer margin than some previous games.
Whether the improved performance is an indication of good things to come remains to be seen.
The Guymon Daily Herald asked head coach Bryan Ballard if the tighter score in the Northwest Classen game might have been a turning point.
“I don’t know about a turning point but we did play a little better than we did before that,” Ballard said.
“We were more evenly matched with Northwest Classen,” he added.
Guymon has a tough challenge Friday night in Edmond when they play the undefeated Deer Creek Antlers.
“They (players) don’t have any choice but to get better,” Ballard said.
“We had several kids out this week from injuries,” he added.
One injured player is Arthur Rico, an offensive and defensive lineman who is out with a concussion. Rico is expected to miss at least two more weeks.
Texhoma is undefeated and could be cruising to an undefeated season.
The Red Devils celebrated Homecoming with a 42-6 win over previously undefeated Mooreland last Friday night.
Texhoma will be in Enid playing 1-4 Oklahoma Bible Academy, a matchup the numbers indicate could be a big win for the Red Devils.
Hooker, now 3-2, is playing at 5-0 Fairview Friday night, a contest that that is going to put the Bulldogs’ big men to a test.
Joe Bean and Taylor McBee are each good for multiple touchdowns in most games. If the two team leaders play at their best, maybe Hooker can improve to 4-2.
Okeene handed the Bulldogs a 40-26 loss at Hooker last Friday night.
McBee scored three touchdowns and Bean recorded one.
“We played a good game. We only lost by two scores,” Hooker head coach Jake Kreamer said last week.
“They (Okeene) had a deceptive record. They are a good team. All the teams they played were all top 10 teams,” he said.
The Goodwell Eagles are limping along, 0-5 with their top players injured and out of action for the remainder of the season from injuries sustained in September, leaving the Eagles with fewer starters the team depended on early in the season.
The Eagles visit 3-2 Buffalo Friday night.
The Waynoka Railroaders defeated the Eagles 66-22 in Goodwell’s homecoming game last week, a game played with starters out of action.
“Tonight a lot of freshmen stepped up and helped us out,” head coach Jason Pierson said last Friday after the game.
“We’ve just got to keep moving forward for the future. We’re just moving forward,” Pierson said.
The Tyrone Bobcats were on a roll when they knocked off Shattuck last week. Now they are rolling into Kremlin-Hillsdale for a Friday night contest.
Tyrone is 3-2 and Kremlin-Hillsdale is 2-3.
Shattuck is a former Oklahoma 8-man football powerhouse. That Tyrone win came on the heals of a loss to Forgan two weeks ago.
Shattuck set a national record for the most wins a few years back.
The Bobcats got off to a good start this season, winning their first two games by the 45-point run rule in the third quarter each time. The rule applies in Oklahoma 8-man football.
