February 16, 2011

Hooker's Alex Sanchez.

A look at Thursday’s regional tournament matchups for boys’ area teams in Class A and Class B. The winner and runner-up from each regional, as well as the consolation bracket winner will advance to the Area 1 Tournament.

CLASS A, REGION 1

Hooker vs. Vici

(at Laverne, 8 p.m.)

The Bulldogs and the Indians never met during the regular season, but with the way they were both playing at the end, they have been on a collision course for weeks.

Vici (23-3) has won five straight games and nine of its last 10.

Hooker (16-6), meanwhile, has won three in a row and 11 of its last 12.

The Indians, ranked ninth in Class A, advanced with a 53-44 win over Texhoma in the District 1 final.

The Bulldogs, who are now just one win away from a trip to the Area 1 Tournament, claimed the District 4 championship over Beaver, 63-54.

The winner will advance to face the winner of Okarche and Drummond.

CONSOLATION BRACKET

Texhoma vs. Beaver

(at Laverne, 3 p.m.)

During the regular season the Texhoma Red Devils lost seven games by five points or less.

On Thursday they will get the chance to avenge one.

When the Dusters and Red Devils met on Jan. 28 — their only meeting this season — the Dusters pulled out a 54-52 win.

The loss came in the middle of a three-game losing streak for Texhoma (11-11), which bounced back to win its regular-season finale before beating Turpin in the opening round of the District 1 Tournament.

The Red Devils lost the final to No. 9 Vici.

Beaver (16-8) won the opener in District 4 over Laverne before falling to Hooker in the final.

The winner will advance to face the loser of Okarche and Drummond.

CLASS B, REGION 1

Tyrone vs. Goodwell

(at OPSU, 8 p.m.)

The Tyrone Bobcats have already beaten Goodwell three times this season, but that means little now.

The Eagles proved that much in the District 4 Tournament title game as they pulled out a 36-35 win over Balko, a team they had lost to twice during the regular season.

Tyrone (17-3) advanced to the region tournament as it beat Felt, 67-52 in the District 1 championship.

The Bobcats beat Goodwell 65-51 on Nov. 22, 65-39 on Dec. 12 and 67-39 on Jan. 20.

The winner will advance to play the winner of Forgan and Arnett in the championship game Friday.

CONSOLATION BRACKET

Felt vs. Balko

(at OPSU, 3 p.m.)

The Balko Bison were the only team in Region 1 to receive a first-round bye and not win the district tournament.

It was the third straight loss for the Bison who now have no choice but to turn things around since their next loss will end their season.

Balko (11-12) comes in after losing the District 4 championship to Goodwell.

Felt beat Boise City in the first round of the District 1 Tournament before falling to Tyrone in the final, 67-52.

The two squads did not play during the regular season.

The winner will face the loser of Forgan and Arnett on Friday.

Hardesty vs. Leedy

(at Arnett, 3 p.m.)

The Hardesty Bison knew they were in for a tough game in the District 2 championship as they took on top-ranked Forgan.

Now, following a 74-22 thumping, the Bison will try to bounce back and keep their season alive against Leedy.

Leedey beat Shattuck to reach the final of the District 3 Tournament before losing to Arnett, 87-34.

Hardesty beat Yarbrough to reach the District 2 final.

The winner will play the loser of Tyrone and Goodwell.
