TYRONE—The Pirates went home to Rolla, Kan., Friday night having never made it out of the third quarter. Oklahoma’s 45-point mercy rule for eight-man football ended play after Tyrone’s 10th touchdown with 2:21 remaining in the third quarter.
The Bobcats hit the field fighting with a 22-point first quarter on two pass plays from quarterback Cole Wall to Payson Slater and a 60-yard keeper by Wall. Two of three attempts for two-point conversions were good.
Rolla answered with a touchdown on a pass to Obie Telford and a 2-point conversion early in the second quarter. Then Wall took another keeper into the end zone. A good kick made the score 29-8. Austin Olivas scored another second quarter touchdown on about a 35-yard pass from Wall. That time the kick was blocked — 35-8. Slater scored once again bringing the tally to 41-8. Rolla’s Kyler Telford scored the Pirates’ second touchdown. A conversion was good. Another Wall to Slater pass late in the second quarter produced Tyrone’s seventh touchdown. A conversion failed and the Bobcats led 47-16. The quarter wasn’t quite over when Rolla scored their third and final touchdown with :06 remaining in the half.
Opening the second half with a commanding 47-24 lead, Tyrone lit up the score board with three more touchdowns by Slater, Ethan Reece and Olivas. Two of three attempted 2-point conversions were good.
Slater, a senior who played his previous three high school football seasons as a Hooker Bulldog, scored five touchdowns in the Bobcats’ opener. Olivas and Wall each recorded two and Reece had one.
Tyrone head coach Josh Bell said the Bobcats have a few things to address. “It’s Game 1. There’s a lot to work out.”
Bell was quick to praise his players, specifically Slater, Wall and Olivas.
“You can’t be more proud of a group of kids,” he said.
“Our offense — our offensive line — we never punted the ball once.”
