Thirteen cross country teams from Oklahoma, Kansas and Texas participated in the eighth annual Rattlesnake Run at Guymon High School Tuesday.
More than 400 high school and junior high cross country runners participated from Guymon, Hooker, Texhoma, Beaver, Balko, Boise City and Yarbrough in Oklahoma, Liberal and Moscow in Kan., and Boys Ranch, Perryton, Stratford and West Texas high schools in Texas.
In the high school boys 5k run, Guymon finished fourth with a total time of 1:35:14.34. Hooker finished fifth with a total time of 1:39:01.00.
In the high school girls 3200 meter run, Guymon finished fifth with a total time of 1:12:32.68. Texhoma came in seventh with a total time of 1:17:00.78, and Hooker was ninth with a total time of 1:21:03.00.

For the junior high girls 3200 meter run, Guymon finished in first place with a total time of 1:15.37. Texhoma finished fourth with a total time of 1:22.51.
All cross country teams are wrapping up their regular seasons and preparing for regionals in a few days in Norman for Class 5A Guymon and at Chisholm for small schools including Hooker and Texhoma.
The Guymon boys team is ranked No. 5 in the state in Class 5A. The girls team is not ranked.
“The boys should be second or third,” said Guymon coach Andy Brown.
“The girls were fifth last year. I think we’re good for third or fourth,” he said.
“Derek Portillo has been running really well,” Brown said.
Two other Tiger team members he mentioned were Annie Pierce and Alejandra Alvidrez.
“We’ve got some freshmen and sophomores that have been running good,” Brown said.
“The kids have really put in a lot of time this summer. They ran a lot of miles. It’s beginning to show,” he said.
Hooker coach Stan Kachel said he feels the Bulldog boys are under ranked.
“We’re ranked fourth in the state in Class 2A and we’re better than that,” he said.
“If we run extremely well, we can win,” Kachel said.
He said Jose Cerda is Hooker’s No. 1 runner.
“We don’t know what he can do,” Kachel said of Cerda’s potential.
Two other top male runners for Hooker are Jordan McFarland and Junior Amador, a sophomore in his first season running cross country.
The girls team is not ranked.
“The girls are on the outside looking in,” Kachel said.
He said Guymon, ranked No. 5 in Class 5A, is one of the toughest competitors for Hooker.
“We have a lot of new runners this year,” said Texhoma coach Kelsi Peterson.
“They’re doing pretty good. We have improved with every meet and I’m happy when they are,” she said.
There are two seniors, one junior and two freshman that have a chance to make it to State.
“If they run like I know they can, we should be going to State,” Peterson said.
