Bulldogs, Lady Devils win Texhoma Tournament championships

TEXHOMA—The latest chapter in the Panhandle’s oldest roundball rivalry played out Saturday night when Hooker and Texhoma did battle for the championship in the 35th Annual Texhoma Tournament.

Hooker three-peated. The Bulldogs defeated the Red Devils for the tournament championship in 2011 and 2012.

Tigers bag the Elk 70-52

Guymon had a Tiger in the tank Tuesday night.

The Tigers handed the Stratford Elk a 70-52 drubbing after trailing Stratford 15-10 at the first quarter break.

“I do, I really do (think the Tigers are improving),” said Guymon head coach Troy Cox.

“I’ve been really hard on the kids and they’re responding. It shows,” he said.

“I think we are going to get on a streak,” Cox said.

“I’m real proud of the kids,” he said,

Lady Tigers fall to Stratford

The Lady Tigers showed up to play in the third quarter Tuesday night.

Stratford had a 24-17 lead going into the second half.

Guymon’s 17-10 third period was not enough make a difference. The Lady Elks won 56-37.

“That was it. Game over,” Guymon head coach Amanda Boggs said of the first half.

“The third quarter was the only quarter we showed up,” she said.

“Stratford showed up and played basketball and we didn’t,” Boggs said.

Ashlyn Wadley led the Lady Tigers with 15 points, followed by Denesse Longoria with 11. Wadley and Jahaira Marquez each sank a 3-point goal.

Screaming Eagles scream; Bison fall

HARDESTY—The Screaming Eagles rebounded nicely Friday night from a 59-35 loss to Balko the night before.

Goodwell beat Hardesty 45-29.

Hardesty outscored Goodwell 6-4 in the first quarter. The Eagles came back and led 20-13 at halftime and 34-21 at the final quarter break.

“We played harder. We did some nice things tonight,” said Goodwell head coach Shawn Strain.

“We hit the boards better. Defensively, we were better and it really helped when we hit some outside shots,” he said.

“Hardesty plays hard. My kids played hard, a lot harder than last night,” Strain said.

Lady Eagles tame Lady Bison

HARDESTY—The Lady Eagles soared Friday night with a big win over the Lady Bison.

The 60-36 win over Hardesty came on the heals of a 79-48 loss to Balko Thursday night.

Six 3-point goals by Shambri Kelso didn’t hurt the Goodwell effort. The freshman counted nearly half of Goodwell’s total points.

The Lady Eagles were in control of most of the game, after playing a close first quarter and leading 11-9 at the first quarter break.

Goodwell expanded a 32-19 lead at halftime and led 47-32 going into the fourth quarter.

Bison rout Eagles 59-35; Hardesty next up Friday

GOODWELL—Head coach Shawn Strain said the Eagles must play harder against Hardesty tonight after Goodwell took a 59-35 thumping from the Balko Bison Thursday night.

The first quarter score was close, 8-6 in Balko’s favor at the first quarter break. The Bison led 24-13 at halftime and 40-24 going into the fourth quarter. A 19-11 final period sealed the deal for Balko.

When asked if he thinks the game with Hardesty would be easier for the Eagles, Strain said it won’t be easier if the Eagles don’t play harder than they did against Balko.
